Why we're building Ambient
Nikolai Madlener 5 min read
Every AI tool at work starts from zero. It doesn't know what your team decided this morning, who owns what, or what shipped last week, so you explain it again. We think that's the biggest thing standing between a team and working well with AI. Ambient is how we're fixing it.
In short
- What a team knows is said out loud or typed into an AI chat, and then it's gone. The next person, or the next agent, starts from zero.
- At Miora we built a company memory by hand. It worked, and it took weeks of engineering and an engineer to keep it running.
- Ambient keeps that memory for any team, from its meetings and its work with AI agents, as a wiki the team owns and every AI it uses can read.
- We're in early access now, and we'll write here every Monday about what we learn.
Every AI at work starts from zero
Most of what a team knows is never written down. It’s said in a meeting, in a call, in a quick chat by the coffee machine. More and more of it is typed into an AI chat. Then it’s gone.
Meeting notes stay in one person’s app, if anyone takes them. An agent session ends when the window closes. The next colleague asks the same questions again. The next agent knows even less: it starts every conversation with no idea who your customers are, what you decided on Monday, or why.
So people spend their days pasting context into Claude and ChatGPT. They write status updates nobody reads, and they ask in Slack whether something shipped. Each one is small. Together they’re most of what makes AI at work feel like a smart stranger instead of a colleague.
We built the fix by hand first
At Miora, where I’m co-founder and CTO, we got tired of this and built a company memory ourselves. Our meetings were transcribed and filed into a wiki. Jobs ran every night to keep its pages current. Our agents could read it, so Claude knew what we’d decided without us explaining it.
It worked. It changed how we used AI more than any new model did.
It also took weeks to build: transcription, the wiki, the nightly jobs, the login so agents could read it, and alerts for when a job quietly stopped. It needs an engineer to keep it running, and we learned what happens when a job stops and nobody notices for weeks. Most teams don’t have an engineer to spare for that, and they shouldn’t need one.
That’s why we’re building Ambient. It’s the memory we built at Miora, packaged so any team can switch it on in an afternoon.
What Ambient does
Ambient works in three steps.
- It captures work where it happens. Your iPhone and Mac record meetings and conversations and transcribe them on the device. Claude Code sessions become notes through a plugin. Finished work from Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot comes in too.
- It compiles everything into a living wiki. Every recording and every session becomes a note. The notes feed pages for people, projects, customers and topics: what’s true now on top, a dated timeline below, and every line linked to the conversation it came from. Claude keeps these pages current.
- It answers every AI you use. Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot read the wiki over MCP, the open standard for connecting AI apps to tools. Your team reads it in the app, or in your own git repository as plain Markdown files.
The result is simple to describe. When Lena asks ChatGPT to write a customer update, it already knows the launch moved to Friday. When someone asks Claude whether the export bug is fixed, it knows Nik fixed it on Tuesday, and links to the session.
What we believe
Three beliefs decide what we build.
Every agent should know what your team knows. Every agent in a company should know what the others, agents and people, did and decided. Agents are only as good as their context.
Company wikis finally work. Wikis were always too much work to keep current, so they went stale. Agents change that. They can update the pages after every meeting and every session, so nobody has to.
AI is multiplayer. Today everyone works alone with their own agent. Soon each person’s agent will know what everyone else’s did. That’s what makes a team AI-native.
Private by design
A memory of everything a team says has to be trustworthy, so we started with privacy.
- Audio stays on your device. It’s transcribed on your iPhone or Mac and then deleted.
- It stays in the EU. Everything Ambient stores stays in the EU, on servers in Germany and a database in Ireland. Personal notes are encrypted with a key that’s unique to each person.
- Nothing personal reaches your team unless you share it. A recording stays personal until its owner shares it, and before it goes to the team, Ambient asks whether everyone agreed to be recorded.
- You own it. Your team’s wiki is plain Markdown in your own GitHub or GitLab repository, readable without Ambient.
Where we are
Ambient has run in production since the start of October. Our own team is its first customer: our meetings and our Claude Code sessions feed our wiki, and our agents read it every day. Next, we’re letting the first outside teams in, one at a time.
Ambient is free for individuals. Teams will pay $19 per person per month, and that includes the AI that keeps the wiki current.
We’ll write here every Monday about what we learn building an AI-native team: what works, what doesn’t, and what we change. If you want Ambient for your team, get early access.
Questions
What is Ambient?
A company memory that writes itself. It records meetings and conversations on your iPhone and Mac, captures the work your team does with AI agents, and keeps all of it as one wiki. Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot can read it, so they know what your team knows.
Where does our data live?
Audio is transcribed on your iPhone or Mac and then deleted, so it never leaves the device. Everything Ambient stores stays in the EU, and your team's wiki is plain Markdown in your own GitHub or GitLab repository.
What does it cost?
Ambient is free for individuals. Teams pay $19 per person per month, and that includes the AI that keeps the wiki current. During early access it's free for everyone.
When can we start?
Ambient is in early access, and we're letting teams in one at a time. Join the list on ambientartifacts.si and we'll write when there's a spot for yours.
